Car Key Replacement
The only key to the car went into the lake with the kayak. Now the car sits locked in the driveway with a full tank, and there is no spare in the house, in a coat pocket or anywhere else.
Car Key Replacement
In plain words
Older vehicles without an immobilizer are a pleasure to key, but whether a given car has one is checked rather than assumed from age, since several early-2000s vehicles already shipped with a factory immobilizer. Where a car genuinely needs only a blade, it is cut to the factory code or to a reading of the lock rather than copied from a worn original, so it seats cleanly in an ignition that has seen twenty winters. Where the ignition wafers are tired, the locksmith can say so and service the cylinder in the same visit. The result is a key that turns like the car was new, without the daily jiggle.
How the visit goesAfter fifteen years the blade has worn to a smooth sliver. It needs a jiggle in the ignition most mornings, this week it took three tries, and a copy cut from that same worn key would only carry the wear forward.

How the visit goes
The car itself: battery, access and location
Programming writes to the vehicle's computers, so the locksmith checks the basics of the car before starting. A weak battery from a car that has sat locked for weeks is put on a maintainer so the voltage stays steady through the session. The diagnostic port under the dash has to be reachable, which means the car has to be opened first if every key is gone. Where the car is parked matters as well: an underground garage with poor light, a tight street spot or a snowbank against the driver's door all shape how the work is set up. A few questions on the phone cover most of this.
Milling a high-security blade
Many vehicles from the last two decades use an internal-cut key, sometimes called a laser-cut or sidewinder key, with a wavy groove milled into the flat of the blade instead of teeth along its edge. These are produced on a milling cutter that follows the code to a fine tolerance, because the wafers in a high-security lock have little forgiveness for an off-depth cut. The blank is clamped, the groove is milled on both sides, the burrs are cleaned off and the blade is checked in the lock for smooth travel. A blade that drags or catches is recut rather than forced.
A record of what your key actually is
A car key has an identity of its own: a blade profile, a transponder type, a remote frequency and a part number, and sometimes a key code printed on a tag. The locksmith notes these for you, along with the count of keys stored in the car, so the next spare can be prepared from the details rather than from scratch. Keep the note with your insurance papers rather than in the car. If the vehicle ever changes hands, the record also lets the new owner have the old keys erased and fresh ones made without guesswork about what the car uses.

What affects the quote
Same fees day, night or weekend
1Battery and access to the car
A flat vehicle battery needs a maintainer during programming, and a locked car with no key has to be opened before the diagnostic port can be reached. Both are small items that the quote names plainly.
2Original or aftermarket part
A manufacturer fob and a good aftermarket equivalent both do the job on many models, at different part costs. The locksmith says which is proposed for your car and why, and the quote names the part.
3Programming route the car allows
Some vehicles accept a new key through an on-board routine, most through the programming tool, and a few only through a dealer procedure. The route determines the time and the data involved, and the quote says which it is.
Car Key Replacement: questions
My fob is cracked but still works. Do I need a whole new key?
Usually not. A cracked case often protects a healthy circuit board and transponder, and those can be moved into a new shell of the same pattern with a freshly cut blade. Because the electronics are unchanged, nothing needs programming, and the rebuilt key behaves exactly as before. A new key is the answer when the board is corroded, a button has died or the chip has been damaged.
What is the small metal blade inside my smart key for?
It is the emergency key. When the fob's battery is flat, or the car's own battery has died and the doors ignore the buttons, the blade unlocks the driver's door mechanically. A small release on the fob lets it slide out. On a replacement fob the locksmith cuts this blade to your door lock and shows you where the keyhole is, since on some cars it hides under a cap on the handle.
Does the car have to be towed to a shop?
Often not. The cutting machine, blanks and programming tool travel in the van, and the work is done where the car sits: a driveway, a parking garage, the roadside or a workplace lot. The locksmith connects to the diagnostic port under the dash and cuts and programs on the spot. An unsupported or dealer-only system may still need the vehicle to go to a dealer or a suitably equipped shop, which the VIN check flags beforehand.
