Chemong Park information

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 60%Older homes

About 60% of homes in Selwyn were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Where most homes were built decades ago, doors often still carry their original mortise locks and brass knobs. That hardware can usually be cleaned, re-sprung and kept in service, with a modern deadbolt added above it for strength without losing the look.

  • 93%Mostly houses

Single-detached houses make up about 93% of homes in Selwyn (2021 Census).

Where the housing is mostly single houses, the door into the house from an attached garage is easy to overlook because it feels indoors. It is still an exterior door, and a proper deadbolt there is a sensible, low-fuss upgrade.

Locksmith services

Locks, keys and doors

To orient yourself, the services available in Chemong Park fall into five groups: urgent openings, residential lock work, higher-security upgrades, commercial doors and key control, and safes. A sixth, vehicle keys, is there for households that want one company for every key on the ring.

Commercial

Commercial Locks

Office managers, franchise owners, property managers and shopkeepers all come through the commercial pages. The work is the same trade as residential locksmithing, but the hardware is heavier, the keying is planned and the paperwork matters more.

Bring a locksmith to your door in Chemong Park

Rekeying is our favourite answer in Chemong Park because it keeps good hardware in service. The lock stays, the pins change, the old keys stop working and the new ones are cut on the spot. It suits a move, a lost key or a staff change, costs less than replacement, and leaves the door looking exactly as it did.

  • Plain wordsWe talk about pins, cylinders and strikes only when it helps you understand. Otherwise it is 'this is why the door sticks and here is what fixes it'.
  • Respect for your doorWe treat an old wooden door or a new steel one as yours, not as a project. Non-destructive methods come first, and we ask before drilling anything.
  • Knowing what you are left withBefore we leave, you will know exactly what changed, how many keys exist and what to keep an eye on. Nothing is left as a mystery.

How a visit goes

Rekeying is a change made inside the lock rather than to the lock itself. Many keyed cylinders hold a row of small pins that have to sit at exactly the right heights before the plug will turn, set by the cuts on your key, though some residential cylinders use a side-locking bar instead of pins.

  1. 1 of 3

    Counting the doors and keys

We walk the house with you, note every exterior lock and ask which doors you want on one key. That decides the pin work and the number of keys to cut.

  2. 2 of 3

    Pinning the cylinders

Each cylinder comes out, gets new pins to match a fresh key, and goes back in. Old keys stop working the moment the cylinder is back in place.

  3. 3 of 3

Testing every door with every key

We try each new key in each lock, from outside and inside, hand you the set and explain how many copies exist so you know exactly who can get in.

Locksmith FAQ

(249) 494-5980

What lubricant should I use on the lock afterwards?

Whatever the lock's own maker specifies, since cylinders differ: many call for a dry graphite or PTFE spray blown into the keyway and worked in with the key, once or twice a year, while others prohibit graphite and specify their own product instead. General-purpose oils, grease and sprays feel smooth at first but on most cylinders collect dust and clog the pins, which leads back to the sticking that breaks keys. A little goes a long way; too much of any lubricant can also hold moisture.

My condo entry door is a fire-rated door. Does that change the repair?

Yes, in a good way. A suite door that opens onto a corridor is meant to close and latch on its own every time, so the repair uses hardware suited to a labelled fire door, keeps the self-closing device adjusted and operating, and adds no holes or plates the label does not allow. The building's manager is normally involved, and the locksmith works with the door's rating rather than around it.

Should I rekey after a renovation or when a cleaner stops coming?

It is good practice whenever a key has been out of your hands for a while and you are not certain it came back. Contractors, cleaners, sitters and short-term guests all have honest reasons to hold a key, and most return it, but a rekey at the end of the arrangement is what turns 'probably' into certainty. Some households make it a habit at the close of every project.

If the lock gets replaced, can the existing intercom or buzzer stay?

In most cases, yes. The buzzer, keypad and intercom are generally separate from the mechanical lock or cylinder, so replacing the lock itself does not usually mean replacing the electronic side too. Where the two are connected, such as an electric strike wired to the same frame as a new mechanical lock, the locksmith checks the fit and wiring before starting so the electronic system keeps working once the new hardware is in place. Anything that would need to change is explained beforehand.

What is the difference between a private mailbox and a building's mailbox panel?

A private mailbox, whether a standalone box at the curb or a slot in a house door, belongs entirely to that home. A building's mailbox panel groups many small locking compartments in one frame, usually in a lobby, with each compartment assigned to a unit. The lock itself works the same way in both cases; what differs is who confirms the change and how many other doors sit nearby.
