A lock problem is rarely only a lock problem. It is a door that swells shut in a damp week, a key that snapped on a cold morning, a tenant who left without handing anything back. In Trent River we listen first, explain the options, and do tidy work you can see before we drive off. Nearby, we also work in Allan Mills, Connellys, Crowe Bridge, Healey Falls, Kellers, Stanwood, Westview, Woodland, Ashby Mill, Blairton, Chase Corners, Freeman Corners, Havelock, Preneveau and Rush Point.

The word emergency covers a range, from mildly inconvenient to genuinely frightening. A parent locked out with a baby inside, a shop owner facing a smashed back door at closing time.

Change or rekey

Change or Rekey Locks

Home work is mostly about who holds a key. Moving in, a lodger leaving, a lost spare, a lock that sticks every winter.

Every key we cut in Trent River is tested in the lock it belongs to before we leave. It sounds obvious, but a key that works on the bench and sticks in the door is a common complaint about lock work. We turn each one, from both sides where the door allows, and adjust the cut or the cylinder until every key slides in and turns cleanly.

  • Plain wordsWe talk about pins, cylinders and strikes only when it helps you understand. Otherwise it is 'this is why the door sticks and here is what fixes it'.
  • Respect for your doorWe treat an old wooden door or a new steel one as yours, not as a project. Non-destructive methods come first, and we ask before drilling anything.
  • Knowing what you are left withBefore we leave, you will know exactly what changed, how many keys exist and what to keep an eye on. Nothing is left as a mystery.

Trent River information

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 64%Older homes

About 64% of homes in Trent Hills were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Older homes tend to have had many hands on their doors: owners, tenants, tradespeople, family. A locksmith visiting such a house pays attention to who holds keys now, and rekeying or a keyed-alike set often matters more than any new hardware.

  • 88%Mostly houses

Single-detached houses make up about 88% of homes in Trent Hills (2021 Census).

Detached homes are exposed to weather on every side, so exterior locks see rain, salt and freezing air directly. Choosing hardware with a good finish and a cylinder that tolerates cold, then lubricating it properly, keeps every door turning through winter.

Deadbolt Installation

The bolt on the front door is keyed on both sides. Getting out at night means finding the key in the dark, and with a toddler in the house you have decided the inside should turn by hand. You want it done properly, not just swapped.

Locksmith FAQ

(249) 494-5980

What do lock grades mean when I am picking a deadbolt?

Residential deadbolts are graded under an industry standard in three categories, security, durability and finish, with letter grades from C through A, so a lock marked with three A grades has met the highest level in each. Heavier commercial-pattern bolts are graded 1, 2 or 3, with 1 the highest. The grades let you match hardware to a busy family door or an exposed side entrance without relying on the weight of the box.

Can my interior doors be serviced too, and can one key work all of them?

Usually yes to the first, and to the second once the locksmith checks the locks. Interior mortise latches with privacy turn buttons are lighter versions of the entry lock and respond to the same clean and re-spring. Interior locks in a house were sometimes supplied to one bit key, and where the key sections, warding and levers actually match, the locksmith can restore that arrangement so a single key opens several bedroom and bathroom doors. It is a practical thing to have when a child locks a bathroom from inside.

If the lock gets replaced, can the existing intercom or buzzer stay?

In most cases, yes. The buzzer, keypad and intercom are generally separate from the mechanical lock or cylinder, so replacing the lock itself does not usually mean replacing the electronic side too. Where the two are connected, such as an electric strike wired to the same frame as a new mechanical lock, the locksmith checks the fit and wiring before starting so the electronic system keeps working once the new hardware is in place. Anything that would need to change is explained beforehand.

What if my safe is bolted to the floor or built into a wall?

The opening and combination work proceed the same way regardless of how the safe is mounted; access to the lock face, dial or keypad is what matters, not whether the case itself can be moved. A built-in or bolted safe simply means the locksmith works around its fixed position rather than moving it to a more convenient spot.

What information should I have ready before requesting a quote?

Knowing roughly what the safe will store, whether it is a new purchase or an existing unit, and what floor or wall it will sit against covers most of what shapes the visit. If the safe is already on site, its approximate weight and dimensions help too, along with whether it currently has a working lock and combination. An insurer's stated rating requirement, if there is one, is worth mentioning as well.
